Britain will give France £480m (€540m) over three years to stop small boats from crossing the English Channel.
The announcement was made at a summit between UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Friday.
Macron said France would also contribute, but the amount was unclear. The money will be used for a new detention center in France and 500 more police officers. Drones are also being procured to prevent people from crossing the English Channel. France assists in patrolling the French coast.
Sunak said the money would help “put an end to this vicious trade in human life.” He has made banning small boats one of the most important promises he has made to his government. He has vowed to “crack down on criminal gangs” who profit from transporting migrants.
For Sunak, the issue of migration is the focus – no longer should asylum be granted
The number of migrants arriving on English shores soared to more than 45,000 last year, a 500 per cent increase in two years.
SUNAK needs cooperation with France to deal with people from Afghanistan, Iran and Syria.
The Conservative British government wants to ban asylum applications and plans to deport migrants elsewhere, possibly to Rwanda.
Refugee organizations have strongly criticized the law, which does not stop migrant boats. It is feared that this law will lead to permanent misery for tens of thousands of people.
“A new beginning” – Macron and Chung show strong camaraderie
France and Great Britain took a major step on Friday to end years of fighting over Britain’s departure from the European Union (Brexit).
At a summit aimed at restoring ties, French President Emmanuel Macron greeted British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak with smiles and mutual pats on the back — a stark contrast to years of wrangling between London and Paris.
Both Macron and Chung announced that the Paris summit marked a new beginning for Anglo-French relations.
Britain’s exit from the European Union has complicated relations between France and Great Britain in recent years. Macron also suggested that Sunak’s three predecessors had not done a good job of dealing with the tense situation.
If we are honest, the relationship between our two countries has had challenges in recent years. Today we have taken collaboration to an unprecedented level
– British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in Paris
During their joint press conference, the two leaders expressed a strong sense of camaraderie. Macron spoke of “dear Richie,” while Sunak thanked “mon ami,” and the conversation ended with a hug.
The two sides reportedly agreed to continue nuclear cooperation. They reaffirmed their support for Ukraine and pledged to strengthen cooperation between their military forces, including the development of robots and air defense systems.
