He could have ended up being a successful player in England

Last year Nigeria’s Moses Ogbu had a huge hit at Allsvenskan, pushing newcomer Mjällby to fifth place.

The striker now lives in China – but could have ended up at a prestigious English club.

According to the podcast Football is back home Sheffield Wednesday made an attempt to recruit Ogbo. But it was above all a factor that prevented the transformation from becoming a reality.

In terms of newcomer Mjällby who finished an exciting fifth, Moses Ogbu was the team’s top scorer. The Nigerian scored fourteen goals and three assists in 2020, and was described as one of Olsvenskan’s most important players that year.

The striker was suitable for big clubs such as Hammarby and Djurgarden – but last winter Ogbo decided to move to Chinese club Wuhan Three Towns.

Now over the summer, Ogbo could end up in England. According to the football podcast, well-established English Premier League club Sheffield Wednesday have been interested in recruiting the striker.

But above all there was one thing that put an end to the transition. English regulations.

Since the UK left the European Union, it has become more difficult for clubs and players to get work. The Football Association (FA) has established a system in which players earn points based on, among other things, playing international matches, selling club league and playing minutes on a club team.

If the player gets enough points, the person has the right to apply for a work permit, or alternatively to get a so-called “autopass” that depends on the merits of the national team. The system makes it easy for players from the top-ranked soccer countries to get points.

The new regulations thus prevented Sheffield Wednesday from recruiting Musa Ogbo.

– Sheffield called his representatives to see if it was fun. It could have been. But after the club relied on the deal for two days, they came to the conclusion that it was irrelevant, says host Oscar Kiske on the podcast episode.

Previously Ogbu represented clubs such as Gimo IF, IK Sirius, Jönköpings Södra, Al-Ain, Grimsby Town and Mjällby and thus now Wuhan three cities.
