America stands behind
Now both the US and Britain are behind Israel and point out that Iran was responsible for Thursday’s attack. On Sunday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said the country firmly believes Iran carried out the attack.
Britain has also commented on the attack.
“We believe this attack was planned, targeted and a clear violation of international law,” British Foreign Secretary Dominic Robb said on Sunday.
Iran denies the allegations
At the same time, Iran denies involvement in Thursday’s attack and describes the allegations as baseless. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Qadir al-Saeed said Iran was not involved in the attack.
The Mercer Street is owned by Japan but operated by Israeli-owned shipping company Zodiac Maritime. According to the company, the ship was en route from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to Pujaria in the United Arab Emirates. The shipping company said the U.S. Navy card protected the damaged ship after the attack. On Saturday, the U.S. State Department announced that it would assist in the investigation.
