Tough Olympic Draw for Sweden – Group Against World Setter

This summer, Sweden will play in the Olympics and on Wednesday, the groups have been decided. From seeded group 1 was between the world runners-up USA or the world’s Japan – and now Peter Gerhardsson’s team is clearly finished in the same group as USA, and the two teams will meet in their first group match, on July 21.

The meeting of Sweden and the United States will be fraught with at the Olympics given that the two teams met in the 2016 Olympics and where Sweden won in the quarter-finals after a penalty shootout. There, goalkeeper Hope Solo tried to sting Lisa Dalkvist before the decisive penalty kick and the loss was really heavy for USA, and their players still talk about their inability to let go of that match.

Peter Gerhardson met with the United States three times and never won, but there was a loss and a draw.

From the ranking group 3, it was between Canada (eight in the rankings), Australia (the ninth in the rankings) and China (the 14th in the rankings). Through those teams, Australia was placed in the same group as Sweden and the United States.

This means that it will be a Swedish encounter given that Tony Gustafsson is the captain of the Australia national team.

Australia was the biggest loser after the updated standings as it lost two places and thus fell into the third seeded group in the Olympic lottery.

Out of the 4 ranking group, it was between New Zealand (22nd in the rankings), Chile (37th in the rankings) and Zambia (104th in the rankings).
