Prince Joachim of Denmark took a different path with his family.
In 2019, the Danish court announced that Prince Joachim and Princess Mary will leave Denmark with their youngest children, Prince Henrik and Princess Athena, and move to France. Since then, the family has lived in Paris, but no other explanation for the situation within the royal family has come.
Until now.
In an interview with the French magazine Point de Vue, Prince Joachim first opened up about his divided feelings about being part of the royal family – including ending up in the shadow of his older brother, Crown Prince Frederick, who plays a more visible role.
It is more complicated between us. The crown prince must simply follow the course of events. But he says he does not know anywhere what is expected of the second man and his wife, neither in writing nor in speaking BT.
Praises Prince Harry’s decision
In the early 2000s, Queen Margaret’s husband, Prince Henrik, was struggling with the same problem – to be distinguished “Number Two”.
My father became aware of the same dissatisfaction and was unable to clarify his place in the royal family, as Prince Joachim says now.
In the same interview, Prince Joachim expressed his understanding of Prince Harry’s split from the British royal family. He says he respects Prince Harry very much and that he is “very brave” who followed his heart.
Princess Mary: “Feeling Freedom”
Meanwhile, Prince Joachim and Princess Mary stated that it was not entirely their decision to move to France.
But now that it’s over, Princess Mary feels a lot more free, she says.
It is true that I feel more freedom. This can give us a chance to find our place, always with the mission of representing the family and our country in a good way, she tells the French magazine according to BT.
