It’s official: Sony is investing in Discord. The company bought a minority stake in the chat service. And now Sony and Discord are working on closer integration between Discord and PlayStation on both console and mobile starting early next year. This was announced by Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment in one Formal speech.
The collaboration would allow friends to “hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily when playing games together” – perhaps by allowing Discord interactions on PlayStation consoles, although the announcement did not make clear exactly how integrated the chat service was. Interestingly, this news comes a few weeks after the news that Microsoft tried to buy Discord for billions of dollars, but it never came to fruition.
Now that Discord has sold a minority stake to Sony, it looks like the company will Remain independent Currently.
What could this mean for the future?
It’s possible that we won’t receive more information on this until the start of 2022 or a little earlier, but it looks likely that PS5 users will receive voice and chat calls on multiple platforms via Discord. Sony is bringing more and more games to the computer, such as port playback Days passed, With a “whole bunch” of other addresses to follow, so being able to link to these user bases is really helpful from a business perspective.
This cross-platform support may not only apply to PS5 and PC in the future – it may also happen that more platforms, such as Xbox, will be supported over time. But Sony will likely have some kind of console platform exclusivity as part of its investment terms, so we just have to wait to see how it goes.
