Formula 1's greatest ever winner – and now he's been honoured too. Lewis Hamilton is being honoured by Great Britain at the turn of the year.
In November, Lewis Hamilton secured his seventh Formula 1 world championship title, and before Christmas, he was named Sports Personality of the Year in his native Great Britain by the BBC.
And in the new year, Hamilton receives the next honor for his efforts on and off the Formula 1 track. He has been knighted and will be able to call himself “Sir” in the future.
According to Reuters, there was a big question mark surrounding Hamilton's Nobel Prize. He is registered in Monaco for tax reasons, but British media say Prime Minister Boris Johnson personally worked to have Hamilton honored for his sporting achievements.
Hamilton is the most successful Formula 1 driver of all time statistically, with 95 Grand Prix wins and 98 pole positions. In terms of titles, he broke Michael Schumacher's record this season.
– Lewis is a giant in our sport and his influence is huge both on and off the car. What he has achieved is incredible and there is more to come, says new Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali.
Hamilton is one of a handful of British athletes to have been knighted while active, Reuters said. Alastair Cook (cricket), Bradley Wiggins (cycling), Mo Farah (athletics) and Andy Murray (tennis) are the others.
