When the Ice Hockey World Cup is held in Slovakia next year, Great Britain will be one of 16 countries taking part in the tournament. Great Britain secured their promotion on Saturday night when they defeated Hungary.
In 1994 Great Britain last played in the Ice Hockey World Cup. In the Italian Championship, the team lost all five of its group stage matches and the goal difference was 7-44.
Since then, the country has maintained the level longer, but is now taking a step towards the good room again. The lead was secured when the team defeated Hungary 3-2 after a penalty shootout.
The Brits needed just a point from the game to move higher, but for a long time it looked as if they would come away with a clean sheet. Hungary led 2-1 but with fifteen seconds left, Robert Farmer equalized.
– I cannot describe the feelings. We will face the best countries in the world. We never doubted ourselves and achieved the biggest win of my career. Says the hero of the match, the farmer.
Great Britain won the first division by eleven points. Italy finished second and will also play in next year's World Cup.
