Britain has sent fighter jets
British fighter jets have flown in to meet the Russian plane.
This information was released by the British Ministry of Defence.
Both the country's navy and air force have been forced into action after Russian ships and warplanes moved into Britain's “sphere of interest”.
Two fighters were dispatched from RAF Lossiemouth, supported by a Voyager from RAF Bryce Norton, to engage two Russian Bear-F aircraft flying close to Britain.
“save”
The ministry further asserted that this was done “to safeguard national security”.
– Royal Navy warships have closely shadowed the Russian fleet over the past week, with four of its ships sailing through the English Channel and North Sea to help protect Britain's national security, the UK Ministry of Defense explains.
– In addition, two RAF Typhoons from RAF Lossiemouth supported by RAF Bryce Norton's Voyager were dispatched to shoot down two Russian Bear-F aircraft operating near the UK.
Under NATO rule
The ministry continues.
– RAF jets were launched under NATO command and worked closely with our partners to track aircraft as they passed through international airspace.
– Our Typhoon fighter jets took the plane out of the UK air information zone and at no time did the Russian plane enter UK sovereign airspace.
The Minister makes a statement
Defense Minister John Healy commented on the incident.
– This government is committed to making Britain safer at home and stronger abroad. The actions of the Royal Navy and RAF over the past two weeks demonstrate their selfless commitment to safeguarding our national security, he said.
– I would like to thank the members of our armed forces who participated in this operation, whose professionalism and skill were fully demonstrated as they worked seamlessly with our NATO allies to uphold international standards.
Happens in many countries
Russia continues to use fighter jets to fly into or near the airspace of many European countries.
Several times in the past, Russian planes have violated both Swedish and Finnish airspace.
