Disrespect for tourists taking selfies, increased visitor numbers and rising housing prices are said to be some of the reasons for the recent mass demonstrations in Spain.

Now UNESCO is warning that tourist anger could spread to more countries, describing the situation as “totally unbalanced,” according to reports. The Guardian.

According to UNESCO, tourism has exceeded the limits that local residents can tolerate in tourist resorts.

“A family used to live here.”

“The housing crisis was the last straw,” Peter Debryne, senior project manager for sustainable tourism at Unesco, told the Guardian.

The newspaper points out that residents of popular tourist destinations such as Ibiza are forced to live in mobile homes and tents, and that it is common in Malaga to see posters reading “A family used to live here” and “Go home.”

During the summer, hatred towards tourists increased, and among other things, the Spaniards sprayed tourists with water pistols and put up signs reading “You are not welcome.”

reflects frustration

According to DeBrian, this type of reaction and protest is extreme and unnecessary, but it reflects the frustration felt by the Spanish people. He also believes that they may not stop until there is some kind of reaction.

Some measures have already been implemented to reduce the negative impacts of tourism.

The mayor of Barcelona has decided to reduce apartment rents for tourists before 2028.

Other tourist destinations in Europe, such as Mallorca and Dubrovnik, have chosen to limit the number of cruise ships to curb overtourism.

But it is not certain that attempts at localisation will help, says Peter DeBrien. He told the Guardian that similar attempts had been made before without any proven effectiveness.

He stresses that it is now important to look for solutions that can be sustainable in the long term in order to create stability.
