There are several specialty bike manufacturers that make ATBs (all terrain bikes) that start from mountain bike geometry rather than as they used to when designing gravel bikes (such as Surly, Marin, Skalar, Wilde Bicycles, etc.). These are shamefully expensive, so I tried to build my own ATB from an old, proper MTB frame. It won’t be as fast on asphalt as a regular gravel bike, but it’s more capable of traveling over dirt roads, winter trail conditions, and other challenging conditions – whether that’s adventure or commuting. You could probably call it a hardtail CX MTB – but how fun is that…
Drivetrain 1×11 (11-46 cassette 36t wide narrow drivetrain) with hydraulic disc brakes
Most of the bike is factory new/very lightly used except for the frame and wheels.
What's brand new:
The entire brake system: brakes, pads, discs, mounts, etc.
The entire drivetrain: gears, shifters, chain and cassette, pedals, and crank bearing.
New fork, handlebar, grips and seat post.
New winter tires come with purchase if desired (Schwalbe Winter Marathon)
The following is lightly used but in very good condition:
Luggage rack, aluminum fenders, crankset and saddle
I sanded all the paint off the frame and sanded and polished it to give it a raw metal look. I am very happy with the result. Matching eagle flame decals are also available if desired.
Unfortunately, it's on the smaller side for me – I'm 180cm – and I have a higher seatpost and could use a few more centimetres; hence the attempt to sell. I hope to get back everything I put into new components to make another attempt at building a similar bike but with a larger frame.
