Windows 11 is annoying users with new pop-ups

Microsoft has been getting increasingly bold with the ads the company is showing to paying Windows users. If it’s not the constant reminders to upgrade to Windows 11 for those using Windows 10, it’s an ad for Game Pass or Microsoft 365. And now comes another one, according to reports. PC-Welt.

The new announcement consists of a notice warning that a computer isn’t backed up. How would the system know if a user was running any backup software? It wasn’t. The warning appears to anyone who hasn’t activated OneDrive’s backup feature that keeps certain folders backed up — even if the user has done local backups with Macrium Reflect, and full cloud backups with services like Backblaze and Mydrive.

In addition to the notification itself, the Start menu displays an orange dot next to the user's account to draw attention. If the user taps on the notification, it will temporarily disappear and will soon return again.

For those who subscribe to Microsoft 365 and don't actually use all the space included in OneDrive, the service's backup functionality can complement other backups, but since it doesn't include all files and folders even in the user's home folder, it can't be considered complete protection.
