The government has approved the proposal for a foreign and security policy statement. The report contains an assessment of Finland's foreign and security policy environment and establishes goals and priorities for Finland's activities in the coming years.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elena Valdonen, led the preparation of the government's foreign and security policy statement. A new era of foreign and security policy means that Finland now finds itself as a military ally in an increasingly challenging environment.
“NATO membership is a new era for Finland. Finland sees its security as part of collective security, accepts its responsibility for the security of the entire alliance and works together with its partners for our common values,” says Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen.
The most important goals of Finland's foreign and security policy are to protect Finland's independence and territorial integrity, prevent Finland from ending up in military conflict, and guarantee the security and well-being of Finns, the State Council said in a statement. Finland's foreign and security policy is based on value-based realism. Finland adheres to values that are important and central to us, such as democracy, the rule of law, international law, human rights, equality and equity.
The report was prepared by the Ministry of External Affairs in collaboration with the Office of the President, Prime Minister's Office and Ministries. The President and the Cabinet's Foreign and Security Policy Committee have established political guidelines for the work. The Riksdag has participated in the preparation through a parliamentary follow-up committee appointed by the government.
