Football matches have been canceled across the UK after stadiums were hit by flooding and freezing temperatures

Plenty of fans will have to enjoy Saturday football in front of the sofa this afternoon with a string of non-league fixtures cancelled.

The recent cold snap and heavy rain have forced the suspension of a number of matches originally scheduled for this afternoon.

The top five levels in England have so far been unaffected by heavy rain across the country.

But underneath that, many stadiums couldn't cope.

Banbury United's National League North match with South Shields has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

The match was the sixth canceled for Banbury this season due to flooding from the nearby River Cherwell.

Concerned local MP Victoria Prentice said yesterday: “I was delighted to come down to Banbury United FC this morning to meet chairman Ronnie Johnson and community manager Lisa Dixon.

“Floods have caused real problems for the club this season, leading to many games being cancelled. The Purists are an important part of our city and the board have done a fantastic job despite everything that has been thrown at them.

“I will be speaking to the Environment Agency, local authorities and my colleagues in government to see what we can do to support the club and secure its long-term future.”

In the same league, the scheduled match between Bishop's Stortford and Chorley was cancelled.

While in the National League South, Truro City's match with Hemel Hempstead was postponed due to a flooded pitch.

Weston-super-Mare's match against Eastbourne Borough suffered the same fate.

Further down the pyramid, the weather wreaked more havoc on the installations.

Heaton Stannington posted a photo of a pitchfork being thrown into a pond by a corner flag, after the game with Temecula FC was cancelled.

Coggeshall Town's scheduled match against Hullbridge Sports was postponed for similar reasons.

Among the matches that will also be canceled are Beckenham Town v Cray Valley Pepper Mills, as well as Maldon & Tiptree v Stowmarket Town and Beckham Town v Ed Hill.

Heavy rain this morning caused Middlesoe Rovers' match with Keynsham Town to be cancelled.

North of the border, Penicuik Athletic's match against Glenrothes FC was postponed due to a frozen pitch.
