Aston Villa Finance: Club announces loss of £119.6m for 2022-23 season

Aston Villa announced a loss of £119.6m in its latest accounts to 31 May 2023.

The accounts cover the period that saw Villa finish seventh in the Premier League to qualify for Europe.

Villa say the figures are “in line with the strategic business plan” and within the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules.

PSR rules, introduced in 2015-16, allow losses of up to £105 million over a three-year period.

“The owners of Aston Villa remain committed to the long-term, sustainable development of the club, and we look forward to continued progress in implementing our strategic plan,” the statement read.

Investments in infrastructure, academy, charity and women's football can be deducted from the PSR figures. Clubs are also allowed to recover losses incurred during the two seasons affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Villa have made a £300,000 profit in their accounts for the 2021-22 season, helped by the sale of England midfielder Jack Grealish to Manchester City for £100m.

The Midlands club saw revenues increase by £217.7m in 2022-23, up from £178.4m the previous year.

Wage costs rose from £137m to £194.2m, and amortization on player contracts increased by £10m to £92.5m.

Last summer they signed French winger Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen for £51m and Spanish defender Pau Torres from Villarreal for £31.5m, although these figures will be included in next year's calculations.

The team currently sits in fourth place in the Premier League and is on track to secure a place in the Champions League next season.

In January, the Toffees were charged alongside Nottingham Forest over alleged breaches in their accounts leading up to the 2022-2023 period.

Forrest's case is scheduled to be heard this week. The date of Everton's hearing is not yet known but it must be heard by April 8. However, any appeal could take that process until May 24, the week after the season ends.
