According to a new study conducted by Smile Dentistry, it appears that teeth whitening still tops the list as the most in-demand cosmetic dental procedure. At the same time, videos abound on Tiktok about dangerous and unsafe dental cosmetic methods.
According to the survey, 7 out of 10 people considering cosmetic dental procedures would like to whiten their teeth. In addition, the results showed that every fifth person is interested in getting veneers to improve their smile.
– Since interest in cosmetic dentistry is constantly increasing, it is important to understand the risks that exist. Many are attracted to the chalky white smiles and perfect teeth they see on social media. But it's important to understand that the beauty that appears online often hides a back side of risks and uncertainties, especially when it comes to cosmetic dental procedures, says Lars Armback, M.D., national dental director at Smile Dentistry.
To avoid falling into the wrong hands and to protect your smile, Lars Armback, dental expert at Smile Tandvård, has compiled five sage tips.
Professional dentist advice for cosmetic dental procedures:
- Consultation with a licensed dentist: Before you choose to have cosmetic dentistry, it is important to book a consultation with a qualified, licensed dentist. This ensures that the procedure is adapted to individual needs and is performed correctly and safely.
- Understanding the risks: Be aware of the risks, complications, and side effects that may be associated with different aesthetic procedures. An open dialogue with your dentist will give a clearer picture of what to expect and how any risks can be managed.
- Don't be fooled by what you see on social media: Taking inspiration from a TikTok video of someone getting a “Hollywood smile” may be tempting, but it's important to remember that such procedures aren't always as safe as they seem. Traveling abroad, such as Turkey for dental procedures, can involve increased risks and difficulties in follow-up if complications arise. Many of these interventions are large-scale and permanent. My advice is to choose a local dentist to ensure safety and who can also follow up the treatment easily.
- Do not perform cosmetic dentistry at home yourself: Avoid relying on do-it-yourself options like invisible braces or at-home teeth whitening. It may seem tempting, but performing these treatments without professional supervision can increase the risk of complications. Only a qualified dentist has the knowledge and experience necessary to tailor treatment to your specific needs and monitor it to avoid potential problems.
- Follow up regularly: After undergoing cosmetic dentistry, it is important to follow up regularly with the dentist to ensure the sustainability of the result and to detect any complications at an early stage.
I hope that these five points will make you who are considering a cosmetic dental procedure think a little more about how or where to have the procedure done. But also to have a long-term plan for change, says Lars Armbach.
