Mark Wood bats as England take three wickets before lunch

Mark Wood proved his England call-up with the wickets of in-form Indian batsmen Yashavi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill on a lively opening morning of the third Test.

Wood departed in Visakhapatnam, returning as England picked two seamers for the first time this series in Rajkot and took the edges of two batsmen who crossed triple figures in the last over.

Wood also scored Rohit Sharma on the helmet with a spiteful jack while what was expected to be the flattest pitch yet was played against type as Tom Hartley found his grip and turned to dismiss Rajat Patidar.

Joe Root wasted a tough chance when Rohit was on 27 as the India skipper overturned a lbw ruling from James Anderson three balls later before going to lunch unbeaten on 52 in India's 93 for three.

Ravindra Jadeja shuffled the order on his return from injury and regained composure after India slumped from 22 for nil to 33 for three after Ben Stokes made incorrect contact at the toss in his 100th Test.

There was not much trouble in India's opener as the series, which was tied at 1-1, resumed after a 10-day break. But while Jaiswal hit a scintillating double century in Vizag, there is a perception that he struggled against the fast pace and he uncertainly pushed his second delivery off Wood and died.

Wood was tantalizingly close to Gill's torso in his follow-up after finding some inside movement. Perhaps to his dismay, India's number three bowled inside the lineout and passed the next ball to Ben Fox on his 31st birthday as Wood collected his second wicket in six balls.

Rajat Patidar was undone on the surface as Hartley's innocuous delivery was stopped in his first over before turning sharply and leading to a withdrawn cut shot that caught the bat and soared gently to cover.

Instead of exposing debutant Sarfaraz Khan, Jadeja moved to one field to partner Rohit, who looked unconcerned at the other end but was beaten to his own net by the excellent Wood.

He disrupted Hartley's lengths with a counter-attack, but seeking a third four in the over, took the whip across the line edge and flew to Root, who was unable to react quickly enough to the opportunity.

The umpire's finger went up when Anderson hit Rohit's pad but the opener was saved by an inside edge on review. Rohit and Jadeja (24 not out) settled down from that point onwards and there were few more bookings in the rest of the session.
