A coalition of 65 MPs and 31 rights and equality organizations in Britain now wants police and private companies to ban the use of facial recognition for surveillance. Alliance has published Report Privacy settings via the Big Brother Watch website.
Facial recognition used for surveillance refers to instances where a person is biometrically scanned by cameras in real-time and matched to a database. In Great Britain, the technology was used, for example, at the coronation of Charles III, sporting events, concerts and in central London.
Earlier this week, the country’s police minister, Chris Phillips, revealed plans to make all of Britain’s 45 million passport photos searchable with police facial recognition for minor crimes.
A spokesperson for the UK Home Office says: BBC The use of facial recognition is “on a sound legal basis” and the technology has helped police catch criminals, search for missing or vulnerable people, carry out complex investigations and free up resources.
