Funny and clever, or boring and no more depth? Opinions differ on the much-hyped Barbie movie, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, which opens this weekend.
Times reviewer Stephanie Zacharek has mixed feelings. She is satisfied with the professional production, but believes that the film, despite good acting efforts, becomes more complex as it goes on.
“It’s a shame, because the first half hour is really cool and funny.”
Entertainment Weekly’s Devan Coggan is also delighted with Ruby as Barbie and Gosling as Ken, and how the imaginary dolls behave in the visual “Barbie world” and in real life. This is especially true of the latter.
“He steals the show,” she wrote.
When DN’s Kristen Joselos finished watching the movie, she wasn’t in the “shiny rush” she had expected.
“Instead, one is left in a listless, but not disturbing, limbo.”
Aftonbladet’s Emma Gray Munth calls Barbie “childishly funny” and believes it is suitable for adults and children alike, even if some fly over the heads of young viewers.
“Scenography! Costumes! Fantasy! Silly dance numbers! You’ll be delighted.”
