Gaming-focused hardware manufacturer MSI writes in one press release Parts of the company’s information system have recently been subjected to a cyberattack. Since discovering the whole matter, MSI staff have begun working on tidying up the system from a functional and security perspective, as well as reporting the incident to the appropriate authorities. At the time of writing, the affected systems should have been phased in gradually without having a significant impact on the company’s operations.
As a result of the cyberattack, MSI is now warning its users to be careful when downloading their updates. If attackers come across such material, it can be modified with a malicious add-on and cause problems. Therefore, the recommendation is to only use files downloaded from the official MSI website, which include firmware and BIOS, among other things, for the company’s motherboards, graphics cards and laptops.
The company did not mention that any customer data would be affected by the cyber attack. However, MSI writes that it is still working to ensure data protection for its customers, employees and partners.

The gang claims to have stolen 1.5 terabytes of data from the MSI network and now threatens to post it on the Internet unless a $4 million ransom is paid. Whether this is true and whether MSI agrees to the attackers’ terms remains unknown.
