– For the first time in our history, a president tried to obstruct the peaceful transfer of power after losing the elections. Joe Biden said, but it failed.
One year ago, on January 6, 2021, hundreds of violent supporters stormed the Trump Capitol. Biden stated that Trump’s refusal to accept the election result was behind the events of that day – which he described as an “armed uprising”.
The President, who gave his speech in the Statue Hall inside the Capitol, said that they came here in the service of an individual man, not the United States.
Biden did not mention Trump by name, but called him the “former president,” but he was nonetheless hurtful in his description of how Trump handled the election loss.
– The former president weaved a web of lies around the 2020 elections, and Biden continued that for him, power is more important than principles.

The speech marks a shift in the president’s tone. During his first year in office, Biden chose to largely ignore his representative, often focusing in his speeches on the fact that he wanted to unite a divided United States. Now he has chosen instead to point directly to Donald Trump as responsible for the attack on Congress.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who spoke before Biden, said the “extremists’ goal” to storm the Capitol was not just the “lives of elected politicians” or the demolition of a building.
“It was the institutions, values, and ideals that generations of Americans walked and bloodied their lives to establish and defend,” Harris said.
Biden was on the same topic.
I will not allow anyone to hold a knife in the neck of democracy. I will defend this. He said I will defend this nation.
– We are fighting for the soul of America.
“Political Charade”
Trump himself did not take long to respond to Biden’s speech.
“He is using my name to further divide the country,” Trump said in a statement. “This is a political charade that exists only to focus on Biden’s complete failure.”
Republican leaders and members shone in their absence during Biden’s speech and the celebrations that surrounded him. Republican Senate opposition leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement that January 6 was a “dark day.” But at the same time, McConnell noted, “It is surprising to see how some Democrats in Washington are trying to capitalize on this memory.”
acclaimed police officers
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Democrats) also gave a speech marking the anniversary.
Pelosi dedicated much of his speech to praising the police who protected the Capitol — and the people inside — against angry, aggressive mobs.
During the day, she will have a panel discussion with famous historians about the event and a number of members will testify about their experiences with the storm.
Facts: The attack on the US Congress
On January 6, members of the US Congress gathered in the Capitol building, to count the electoral votes for the presidential election and formally nominate Democrat Joe Biden to be the election winner and the next president.
In Washington, D.C., tens of thousands of Donald Trump supporters attended a political rally at the same time. At the meeting, Trump reiterated his allegations of systematic electoral fraud and urged his supporters to go to Congress: “If you don’t fight hell, you don’t have a state anymore,” he said.
They did as he said. The protests turned violent when hundreds of people stormed the Capitol and clashed with police.
Five people were killed in the attack, including a police officer.
