A majority in the US House of Representatives voted in favor of President Joe Biden’s infrastructure package, which is estimated to cost more than $1,000 billion, equivalent to about $8.8 trillion.
The package has been approved earlier Senate, and now got the go-ahead with a vote of 228-206, with a group of 13 Republicans also choosing to say yes. Six left-wing Democrats, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, voted “no.”
The announcement was greeted with a standing ovation by Democrats — a long-awaited victory for the president, whose party suffered some defeats in Tuesday’s election.
The package includes investments in roads, bridges, broadband, airports and ports, which are now being put on the president’s table for approval.
On Friday, the House of Representatives chose to delay a vote on a so-called social reform package – with investments in health care, schools and climate change – that are considered more costly.
Some Democrats The left had previously refused to vote for the infrastructure package if they did not vote through the social reform package at the same time. But Democrats on the right, in turn, declined to vote for the social reform package unless they first allow the Congress’ Independent Budget Office to review costs and ensure they are in line with White House estimates.
But in the end, most of them agreed to agree to the infrastructure package, in exchange for promising to vote for the social reform package in the week of November 15.
