2021 Olympics: Sweden can win the group: ‘Great chances’

2021 Olympics: Sweden can win the group: ‘Great chances’

During the Olympic Football Tournament, only twelve women’s teams, out of those teams, made eight to the quarter-finals.

When Sweden played the United States in Wednesday’s opener, not only did they take three points – it gave the Swedes themselves a chance to have a somewhat easier way to reach a potential quarter-final.

So tomorrow’s match against Australia will be an early group final. Where Sweden’s victory means that the group’s victory is clear in principle, because even if the United States wins their remaining two matches, there will be a reciprocal meeting between them and after that Sweden wins 3-0. If New Zealand beat the USA, everything will be decided in the last match.

If we assume Sweden wins and the US does the same, then Sweden will face third place in Group F (Japan, Canada, Great Britain, Chile) or E (China, Brazil, Zambia, Netherlands). Peter Gerhardsson doesn’t want to speculate too much about whether the match against USA will turn out well, but it could stretch a bit.

You have more chance now, I think it feels great to have it. And I can’t say that after the game against the United States, the chances are reduced, but it’s there where it ends somewhere we’ll see, says Peter Gerhardson.

We know we have a higher chance of winning the group now.

‘We’re tracking them’

But first, Sweden will defeat Australia with Swede Toni Gustafsson as captain of the national team. Matildas started the tournament with a 2-1 victory over New Zealand.

– It is a very physical team, it runs a lot and it is difficult in duels, it is really important to adapt to it and we can do the same against the USA and play in a similar way, then I think we can win, says Hanna Glass.

Sweden and Australia competed against each other in the Olympics as recently as five weeks ago. Then the score was 0-0.

There is a difference between training and competition. When it comes to training, there will be more changes and you think more about the players you want to see. But that is enough for us and for Australia. It’s up a bit now, says Peter Gerhardson.

– We have a good view of them now.
