It was announced today that Xiaomi and Leica are deepening their cooperation. This collaboration is supposed to lead to more innovation in the field of mobile cameras.
Today, Xiaomi and Leica Camera AF announced this Together they founded the Xiaomi x Leica Optical Institute. The institute aims for companies to jointly create a leading standard for camera performance in mobile devices, both in terms of technology and user experience. The first product based on the jointly defined standard will be the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, which is expected to be launched later in the month.
Xiaomi x Leica Optical Institute will draw Leveraging the strengths of both companies to focus, among others, on four key technical aspects of mobile photography:
- Production of ultra-precision optical lenses in small formats
- Achieving the best possible performance for computer-aided imaging
- Maintaining the most stringent optical standards for lenses
- Research and apply the latest optoelectronic technologies
To achieve this, both companies have made significant investments I assembled a team of more than 200 experts. The team will be led by Peter Carby, who, among other things, designed fourth generation Leica lenses. Xiaomi will contribute R&D resources to the institute. Currently, three different laboratories with a combined area of 2,644 square meters are planned to be set up in Beijing, which will focus on camera hardware, image processing and lenses, as well as subjective assessment of image quality.
