After Microsoft stopped reporting Xbox sales numbers, it was pretty devoid of stats, but Phil Spencer recently revealed sales numbers for June and it’s not a happy read.
During the second day of the 2023 Best International Games (BIG) festival in Brazil, Microsoft revealed that Xbox Series X and Series S have currently sold over 21 million units in total, and that two generations of consoles have sold over 79 million units. sum.
This puts total Xbox One sales at around 58 million units as of June 2023 — not great numbers. The numbers themselves are not surprising, as they are generally in line with recent unofficial estimates. For example, VGC reported that Xbox Series X/S sales had reached 20 million units by March 2023.
While 21 million units sold in and of itself isn’t a small number, it’s still barely half the number that Sony was able to sell with the Playstation 5.
While “Game Pass” is a super deal and the new “Starfield” could certainly attract buyers, it looks bleak on Microsoft’s console front. They seriously lost an entire generation of consoles, and now it seems that even the latest flagship console can’t break the downward trend.
It’s hard convincing gamers to switch “ecosystems” when games can be played over several generations, and I have over 300 games bought on the Playstation Store, and it would take something truly revolutionary for me to switch – then no one would do a pointless stunt like the Kinect.
