Women in Västmanland born in 1994 – 1999 now get a free vaccination against HPV, the human papillomavirus, a virus that can cause cervical cancer. The show is part of a national project aimed at eradicating cervical cancer. The reason for choosing women born in 1994-1999 is that the prevalence of HPV is the highest in this group. writes Västmanland region in a press release.
“Each year, about 550 women are affected by cervical cancer, and 150 of them die. Through vaccination and HPV sampling, cervical cancer is expected to be eliminated within a five-year period,” the district writes.
– I urge all 8,800 women in the Västmanland age group to seize this opportunity! It is a very generous offer that gives you the opportunity to protect your health and the health of others. The goal is to one day remember cervical cancer as something that affected previous generations, says Bjorn Svartsgaard, chief physician at the Västmanland Women’s Clinic.
Svartsgård further says:
– It’s a historic investment being made. If we succeed, which we strongly believe in, cervical cancer could become the first form of cancer to be eradicated.
This is how it works:
- You can book an appointment at the health center where you are registered. If it’s better to book an appointment at another health center, that’s okay too.
- To receive the free vaccination, a person must be born between 1994 and 1999, fill out a health declaration, agree to participate in the study and take an HPV self-test.
- In connection with the vaccination, you will receive an HPV self-sample kit. The test can be done at the reception before going home or at home. The sample is then sent to the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm for analysis.
