Set in a fantasy future in the year 40,000, Warhammer 40,000 is a strategy and role-playing game that appeared 30 years ago and is the largest of its kind.
– Estimatedly, there must be a number of millions playing globally. We have 1,200 active players in tournaments in Sweden, but we think about 50,000 people have models and are fairly active, says Jesper Onander Scharren.
Jesper, along with others, founded Veizla, which roughly means folk festival in Old Norse, and is the organization organizing SM this year.
– We saw that there was a very big division in society in Sweden, and there was no rallying point, so we wanted to help players find each other and find tournament matches, he says.
Swedish champion Bjorn Eriksson will not only win the honour, but will also earn a ticket to the World Cup in Atlanta in November this year.
Several ways in
There are many ways to be part of the Warhammer community. Many people consume the stories surrounding the game, for example there are nearly 300 books published about the fantasy world.
A big part of them are the figures themselves, which you can buy and paint yourself. Meticulous and time-consuming work.
This is enough for some, but for others you can also meet on the battlefield against other armies. Matches in the tournament are kept to three hours of play, but can actually last up to approximately six hours.
