Volvo has secured a record order for up to 1,000 electric trucks

Volvo Trucks has signed a letter of intent to sell 1,000 electric trucks through 2030 to Holcim, one of the world’s largest suppliers of building materials. The deal is the largest commercial order to date for Volvo electric trucks, and the first 130 trucks will be delivered in 2023 and 2024.

Holcim is a global supplier of building materials such as cement and concrete with headquarters in Switzerland. Now the company and its subcontractors have signed an agreement with Volvo Trucks to plan to introduce 1,000 electric Volvo Trucks into various Holcim operations in Europe until 2030.

The first 130 electric heavy trucks of the Volvo FH and Volvo FM models will be delivered to France, Germany, Switzerland and Great Britain, among others, during the fourth quarter of 2023 and throughout the next year.

The agreement is the result of a broader collaboration between Holcim and the Volvo Group.

Long-term collaboration and a strong commitment to a genuine desire to make a difference is critical to achieving significant CO2 reductions. “I am very proud of the collaboration we are having with Holcim and the results we are achieving together,” says Martin Lundstedt, President and CEO of AB Volvo.

The transition to net-zero emissions requires in-depth collaboration across the entire value chain. We are excited to work with Volvo to reduce CO2 emissions in our European operations with our electric vehicle fleets. This brings us closer to our goal that 30% of purchases or contracts for our heavy-duty trucks will have zero emissions by 2030, says Jan Jenisch, Chairman and CEO of Holcim.

By replacing 1,000 existing Volvo FH diesel trucks with electric Volvo FH trucks that use green electricity on a typical road, up to 50,000 tonnes of CO2 could be saved each year.

Volvo Group and Holcim are participating in the Science Based Targets initiative, which is driving ambitious climate action in the private sector. The two companies are also co-founders of the First Motors Alliance (FMC).

facts: FMC
FMC (First Movers Coalition) is a consortium of companies that use their buying power to contribute to the commercialization of emerging carbon removal technologies in eight major sectors.

facts: Science-Based Goals Initiative
The Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) drives ambitious climate action in the private sector by enabling organizations to set scientific targets for emissions reductions. Targets are considered “science-based” if they align with what recent climate science says is necessary to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement – limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

facts: Holcim
Holcim is a global leader in innovative and sustainable building materials solutions, headquartered in Switzerland. The company is present in more than 60 countries and employs approximately 60,000 employees.

Note that:
The saving of carbon dioxide depends on the accounts that are used Volvo Trucks environmental calculator (which compares CO2 emissions over an annual mileage of 80,000 km for a 44-tonne truck and assumes that the diesel comparison uses 7% biofuel and achieves an average of 23 l / 100 km).
