Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised that Iran “will regret this” after Tuesday's Iranian robotic attack on Israel. Since then, there have been extensive talks between Jerusalem and the White House about how Israel should act. Biden wants Israel to pledge not to harm Iran's energy sector or nuclear weapons program.
It is no secret that Netanyahu congratulates Trump in the US elections. As much as he wants to see Trump in the White House, he wants to be able to say, “I helped you there.” By attacking Iran's nuclear facilities, Netanyahu will now be able to kill two birds with one stone: hurting Iran while at the same time offering a helping hand to Trump by mitigating Biden's deficit.
Trump's words are not just half a promise of continued support for Israel's aggressive policy toward Iran. The Republican candidate's explicit support for Israel on this point makes it difficult for Biden to criticize and punish the Israeli attack.
Netanyahu's advisors are handling the talks with the United States. He himself does not want to talk to the president, because he wants to avoid a situation in which Biden begs him to step down, and then is forced to say no to the most Israel-friendly American president ever.
It is uncertain to what extent Trump's result reflects real conviction on the nuclear issue, or whether he just seized the opportunity to make Biden look bad. A few days ago, Trump caused concern in Netanyahu's camp when he called for a new nuclear agreement between the United States and Iran.
In 2018, Trump, persuading Netanyahu, withdrew the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the major power agreement with Iran. This was the starting point for the frantic push for the nuclear weapons programme, which today is almost complete. An Israeli expert tells DN:
– In an aircraft hangar somewhere in Iran there is a warhead, a fuel tank, a controller, and a screwdriver. It's all over, the only thing left is the decision. Convincing Netanyahu of Trump in 2018 was a historic own goal.
