On August 2, 1901, the Royal Northern Pneumonia Sanatorium was completed. Now, more than a hundred years later, people still come to this beautiful place, just west of Soleftio, overlooking the Angerman River. The days of pneumonia are over. Now patients are in dire need of lifestyle changes. The most common diseases are stress-related diseases, followed by obesity, diabetes, and chronic pain.
Some people suffer from tobacco addiction, but this percentage is not large. The Ostracin Center receives 40 patients at a time and a few of them are smokers.
–– In such a group there are 3 – 4 where tobacco is included in the picture as part of the lifestyle. Coming here just because of tobacco is unusual, says Benno Krachler, operations manager.
The program has three different main areas: stress, weight and pain management, and then there are options, such as smoking cessation and diabetes.
Patients who choose to quit smoking often need to lose excess weight. These patients are usually 50 years or older.
The stay at Österåsen begins with a basic week, after which you return home for a month, followed by a three-week stay. After six months, you can return for a week for follow-up.
Most people who are referred to Österåsen come from their home region, Västernorrland, but there are some from other regions as well. It is common for participants to face difficult life situations.
—– They are having a hard time in one way or another; Financially, at work, or in relationships, or there may be concerns about children not doing well. These stressful factors make it difficult to address problems.
Living in Österåsen facilitates lifestyle changes, but everyone must decide which changes they want and can handle. Benno Krachler's experience is that it's often a good idea to wait to tackle your biggest challenge. For example, those who want to quit smoking have often already tried at home and failed.
–– You have already received the targeted efforts, so you have come some way but not completely. Boarding school is then an opportunity to improve further and take greater responsibility for one's health. The first step for someone who wants to quit smoking is to walk regularly to gain better stamina, and then take up tobacco later.
There's a lot that can affect whether a lifestyle change can be successful, such as sleep, relationships, physical activity, and diet. All of this is covered during your stay in Österåsen. The difference from home is that you can do this in a quiet environment, under guidance and with meals provided. It makes it much easier than at home where temptations can be many and it is difficult to have the time and ability to stick to good habits..,
– – Here you have to actively choose not to do the right thing. At home, you must actively choose to do the right thing.
Becoming more aware of yourself and your posture is part of being able to choose the right posture in the long term
—– Often times these unusual objects serve a function in one's life. Before you understand the issue and have an alternative, it is difficult to remove things, says Benno Krachler.
