Photos – duplicate, hidden and deleted photos
A flurry of news has hit the Photos app, where photos and videos you take with your iPhone end up. First of all, Hidden and Recently Deleted albums are now locked, so they require Face ID or Touch ID from you personally to show up. Another novelty is that the iPhone can find duplicates in your photo library.
When iPhone and iCloud look for duplicates, it does so to find exact identical photos. Duplicates are displayed side by side in the Duplicate album, where you can choose to merge them or delete a copy. If you merge the duplicates, the image with higher resolution will be saved and the image data such as caption, tags, album affiliation, etc. will be merged into the saved image.
