Cleaning the window with newspaper is a housewife trick that still exists today. But if you do, stop immediately. Here’s why!
FIn the past, people cleaned window panes with newspaper because the paper contained ammonia in the printing ink, which is a good detergent. But because ammonia is toxic, today’s newspapers are printed without the substance. Therefore, using newspaper is pointless, it can even make the windows dirtier.
Do this instead:
Mix your window cleaner with water, vinegar, and washing-up liquid:
- Fill a spray bottle with 5 dL of warm water.
- Pour half a cup of vinegar (24%) into the bottle.
- Mix in a few drops of washing up liquid.
- Shake the bottle to mix the ingredients.

Then get out the window scraper, sponge, razor, bucket of water, towels, dishcloth, and screwdriver.
Remove the accumulated grime from the window with a razor blade, then spray glass cleaner over the entire panel. Wet a sponge and scrub the glass. Pull the window squeegee from top to bottom, sweeping the squeegee with the towel after each length. Wipe the edges of the window with a dry cloth.

Also remember to open the window, for example with a screwdriver, and clean the inside in the same way. It’s a good idea to put towels on the floor before you start, as they may splatter.
