AMD’s eight-core Ryzen 7 5800X3D will join the Ryzen 9 7950X3D and 9 7900X3D at the end of February. This means that the 16 and 12 Zen 4 cores are paired with 128MB of L3 cache according to the company’s 3D V-Cache technology. The extra cache ensures another batch of powerful gaming processors, with AMD talking about an increase of more than 20 percent in the best-case scenario. Additional cores make processors more suitable for more tasks than games, but at the same time they complicate it.
With Ryzen with more than 8 cores, AMD uses many circuits mounted on the same substrate, which is why only a portion of the cores get the extra 3D cache and associated performance benefits. Therefore, it is important to run games on cache-upgraded cores, which is something Windows must handle. To be able to do this regardless of the operating system, a new version of AGESA has been added, which motherboard manufacturers can choose to include in future BIOS versions.
that it Twitter profile “9550pro” which shares screenshots of a beta BIOS for Asus X670 motherboards, which include the AGESA 1005C. The images show a series of settings to independently control which programs should use cores with additional L3 cache, regardless of the operating system and drivers. The user can choose from several different algorithms, which, based on the snapshots, look at the program’s cache and memory usage to determine if it is a game or not.
Windows apps will probably be quite enough for most people, but those who use other operating systems or see a reason why controls are failing are given tools to do so. At the time of this writing, it is not known if and when many manufacturers will integrate the AGESA version into the BIOS. Also shrouded in mystery is whether Ryzen 7000X3D users will need to tweak settings for optimal performance.
