Police and military special forces search for Luis Manuel Díaz in the jungles of northern Colombia.
On Saturday, the Liverpool star’s parents were kidnapped at a gas station in the state of Gujaria, in the small town of Barrancas, which has a population of about 40,000 people, near the border with Venezuela.
Mother Selenis Marulunda was rescued at a wall barrier a few hours later, and father Luis Manuel is still missing.
The authorities announced a reward equivalent to 450,000 Swedish krona for anyone who provides information about the perpetrators, and in the meantime the police and army are conducting further research.
Rumors have spread that they may have crossed the border into Venezuela, but they are unconfirmed. However, the possibility of this cannot be ruled out, in which case you should obtain assistance from the authorities of the neighboring country.
The latest news is that elite Colombian soldiers are searching in the mountainous areas of northern Colombia, where there are dense tropical forests and foggy surroundings, making the search more difficult. The force is said to have received training from the United States and British Special Air Forces.
The number of kidnappings has reportedly increased in the country in recent years, despite the government’s attempt to reach a ceasefire with various rebel groups. Criminals and other insurgents have long kidnapped civilians and extorted ransoms to fund their operations.
Police Chief Alejandro Zapata said Monday that progress had been made in the search and “we know who may be involved.” So far, no party has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.
Meanwhile, Luis Diaz himself is in his home country with family and friends as well as some staff from Liverpool Football Club providing support and security.
