Studio head Will Biles confirms that the next project will be of the same scope and scale as “The Quarry.”
Game studio Supermassive Games, known for its narrative horror and adventure games, debuted with “Until Dawn” (2015), inspired by the teen slasher genre. The developer released the mystical sequel “The Quarry” this summer, which is similarly a cinematic story driven by choice, in which the player’s actions can have long-lasting consequences.
“The Quarry” has received mostly positive reviews, with some calling it one of the best games from the studio since “Until Dawn.” Here at MovieZine, we’ve described the game as a homage to the ’80s slasher genre and given it a high rating.
In an interview with VGC, Will Biles, director of both games, talked about the studio’s next game and its structure.
As before, players should be given the same amount of options and play time with the character. Will Byles says that with a longer storyline, more time can be given to the characters as the player can explore relationships, unlike in shorter games like those in the “The Dark Pictures Anthology” series of games.
Horror is of course again in focus, but it will deviate from the teen horror subgenre as this limits much of the game’s narrative and structure.
It lasts about four years
When asked how long we should wait for the next match, Will Biles confirmed that it wouldn’t be long between “until dawn” and “quarry.” The project will take approximately four years, which means that the new game will be released in 2025 or 2026.
Supermassive Games was acquired by Nordisk Games earlier this year, bolstering the studio and hopefully increasing productivity. Will Byles hopes this will also bring more acting talent to their games and doesn’t think it will be long before Hollywood’s biggest actors appear in more video games.
More interested actors
– It mostly comes down to the number of days we have, because it’s expensive and time-consuming to shoot a game of this kind. It becomes somewhat of a problem, explained Will Biles. When you get someone like Tom Cruise, what could be a budget for the entire game just becomes a budget for his individual salary.
We thought we’d never, say, ever get David Arquette for “The Qaurry,” but now people come back a lot when we try to connect, and older, more established actors are starting to understand video games and see them as an acknowledged component of the show. It’s much easier to get the little ones involved, says Will Biles, because they already know the gaming world most of the time.
Have you had a chance to play “The Quarry” yet? what is your opinion of the game? Is it a smart move to get away from teen anxiety? Tell us in the comments!
