The new Philander Cancer Center has received an award at the EHD Awards

The new Philander Cancer Center in Wales was awarded a win at the European Healthcare Design (EHD) Awards yesterday. The EHD Awards are one of the most prestigious international architecture awards in healthcare architecture and celebrate professional competence and research in the design of healthcare environments around the world. In addition to the new Velendry Cancer Center, White had another nominated and highly praised care project, the Ledplastikcentrum Hospital in Bromma.

During the EHD Conference in London, the winners of the EHD Awards were presented yesterday. The award supports environments of care that promote health and well-being, integrate quality improvement and support the provision of treatment and care in an accessible, sustainable and equitable manner. The new Villiender Cancer Center won in the Future Healthcare Design category.

“With the new Philander Cancer Centre, together with the NHS and our partners, we want to create a caring environment for the future that supports the mental and physical well-being of both patients and relatives but also offers a state of the art workplace for staff,” says Michael Woodford, London studio director, White Arkitekter.

The project is being developed by the ACORN consortium. With high sustainability goals, the building is designed to maximize the use of local natural materials with low carbon emissions that promote health and well-being. Thanks to the use of materials such as wood, lime and clay plaster that are flexible and breathable, a natural and calm environment is created for patients, relatives and staff.

The new Philinder Cancer Center represents a major step forward in healthcare in Great Britain. With a focus on materials with low carbon footprints combined with the goal of preserving the surrounding landscape in the wilderness as much as possible, we are designing a care project where the environment supports and complements medical treatment for patients, says Michael Wofford, London Studio Director, White Arkitekter.

The new Philinder Cancer Center will be carefully integrated into the Welsh landscape while respecting flora, fauna and the environment. At the same time, new places are being planned in the landscape, such as an orchard and communal kitchen garden, which are intended to support healthy habits. By designing informal playgrounds and a variety of walking and cycling paths as well as places to relax, play and move around in nature.

Joint Replacement Centre, Bromma Hospital comes highly recommended
In addition to the new Velendry Cancer Center, Bromma Hospital’s joint replacement project was also nominated in the Design for Adaptation and Transformation category and received high praise. In March 2020, Bromma Hospital was acquired by Vectura with a vision to technically revitalize the outdated care building into a living and caring hub. Two years later, the Ledplastikcentrum was opened and by focusing on recycling, the older building was brought back to life. The project is an example of how an old building can be reused and developed with a new build quality. Thanks to the new process, Bromma Hospital has developed an advanced operating environment for total hip and knee replacement.

With the vision of Vectura as a starting point and with the help of reuse, Bromma Hospital has been adapted to an attractive care environment that is sustainable over time and creates added value for both the urban environment and the people who reside there. Together with Vectura and our partners, we have found solutions that make it possible to focus more on reuse and at the same time meet all hygiene requirements, says Charlotte Robin, Lead Engineer, White Arkitekter.
