“The Fabelmans” is Steven Spielberg’s most personal movie yet – Kulturnytt in P1

Title: Fablemans
Direction and script: Steven Spielberg
Throw: Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Judd Hirsch
Type: drama
degree: 3 out of 5

This is my most personal film, so Steven Spielberg made the new film “The Fabelmans” and we will follow young Sammy Fabelman from his first visit to the cinema until the day he realizes he has found his calling – to give himself up to the world of cinema.

Björn Jansson You watched The Fabelmans, one of your favorite Oscars movies, but is it an Oscar winner?

Does the great Oscar jury want something with a retro look, something said old-fashioned, something safe where you get what you expect… hardly a millimeter more. Yes, The Fabelmans can go home with an Oscar statuette for Best Picture. But I don’t think the growing international jury is very comfortable.

The Fabelmans are told in chronological order, the environments being the safe villa area, the slightly more dangerous college environment, and little excursions in the green where something in the background is captured by a camera.

The Fabelmans is 2 hours 31 minutes long and the first two hours are a stretch of transfer for those who want to be surprised, the last half hour is the film’s credit where Spielberg shows what he can do as a storyteller. And the whole movie ends with a director’s tale, which is a gem.

There is a flicker of nostalgia about The Fabelmans, bullied at school sure but no worse than the camera resolving this conflict and the girl, who breaks up, is more than happy to lend her father’s expensive movie camera to young Sammy Fabelman.

The Fabelmans earned seven Academy Award nominations, despite being a fairly conventional film. Old heroes lead the way in Hollywood.
