Meta Quest launched in 2019, then under the name Oculus Quest, and has received software updates of various kinds since then. When Quest 2 launched, updates with new features kept coming over the predecessor, but now the VR headset manufacturer has decided to put the updates on hold.
In addition to leaving Quest without new functionality in the future, certain functions will also be turned off. Primarily, it has to do with social tools such as the ability to create or participate in groups and remove access to Meta Horizon. The latter is scheduled for March 5.
Why Meta decided to hold feature updates is currently unknown. Hardware differences between Quest and Quest 2 are expected to hamper development of newer features, prompting the Meta to look forward.
However, this only applies to updates that contain new features for Quest and users will of course still have access to their VR experiences. Important bug fixes and security updates are slated to roll out to the headset through 2024. However, Meta doesn’t share an exact end date.
