The developer shows off a 3D game built into Excel

Microsoft's Excel spreadsheet software can be used for almost anything. Reddit user u/awesomegraczgie21 clearly shows this with one Impressive new display From a primitive 3D pseudo-maze model game reminiscent of Wolfenstein 3D.

The comparison with the classic Id Software game doesn't end with the layout: the Excel game uses the same display technology – Casting raysan early introduction to Ray tracing Each light ray is traced only to the first surface it encounters, without any reflections or refractions. However, the developer has gained transparency.

The game contains 400 lines of VBA code and runs on the developer's computer at approximately 0.2 frames per second. The slowness of the device, according to the developer, is mainly due to the fact that the calculations of rays passing through two transparent walls “negatively affect performance, but it's worth it.” In a video, the developer shows off the game at up to 10 frames per second.

The developer created the game as part of a programming assignment during a university course in VBA programming.

Last spring, we wrote about another game developed in Excel, a 2D adventure game set in the Fallout universe.
