The dancing fun reaches its peak when the seniors swing at the Klubb 65.

There is no mistaking the joy of movement when Göran Krantz and Lena Arjen take to the dance floor at the Hagersteinsassen citizens' home. They spin around the hall song after song, just a little out of breath. He is 87, she is 66, and both are true dancing foxes.

– Dancing is so much fun! And it provides good exercise. “We dance a lot and go where there is dancing, like in Årstaliden or Tuben in Farsta,” says Lena Arjen, who once won dance awards in Latin America.

“That was a long time ago, when I was young,” she says. “But I kept dancing.”

Lina Argin, a resident of Huding, and Goran Krantz, a resident of Hagsatara, take to the dance floor. “Dancing keeps me young,” says Goran.

Now the duo have arrived at the fall premiere of Klubb 65, a dance club for retirees that has started for the second fall in a row. The organizer is PRO Solberga-Brännkyrka, whose chairman is Christer Bertling.

He greets everyone warmly, but he doesn't feel entirely satisfied when he looks at the dance floor. He thinks there are too few people here.

– Last autumn, at least 50 people came here at the same time. Let's hope there will be the same number this autumn. There are 17,000 pensioners in Hägersten-Älvsjö, so it should be possible, says Christer Bertling as he takes the microphone to deliver a welcoming speech.

Anyway, there's nothing wrong with wanting to dance for those here. When the Stekanz orchestra starts playing again, all the old legs are quickened. Since there is a shortage of men, Anita Melin Olsson and Anita Johansson swing together for a while.

“You wear something nice, you meet nice people and you make new acquaintances at coffee, with ladies and gentlemen alike. And it’s important to move! Before, I used to dance both ballroom and ballroom, but after hip surgery, I stuck to the foxtrot,” she says.

Anita Melin Olsson lives in Arsta. Others come from further afield. Kenneth Lindström, 72, came here from Södertälje. He started dancing when he was 60 and was bitten.

“I dance whenever I get the chance. The funny thing is beautiful women. You can’t keep them in a pizzeria or a press office,” he says, rolling his eyes.

Many are alone

PRO President Christer Bertling took the initiative to Klubb 65 to energize the retirees. Many seniors are lonely and move around little. He wants them to find themselves here and feel together on the dance floor and at coffee time.

– Hägersten-Älvsjö is one of the largest districts in Stockholm. However, there was no dance for seniors here before. Now Klubb 65 is here and I hope it will become permanent. The district administration gives us some support and that is a prerequisite, he says.

Klubb 65 is a great initiative, believe Fruängen residents Christina Hargill and Marcos Pereira de Moraes, who are almost tireless on the dance floor.

– It's fun to move around and wear nice clothes. You'll be so happy! he says.

There are three dance evenings left during the fall.
