that it Margaret Thatcher England and a mining strike broke out in the country. The Thatcher government stubbornly refuses to accede to any demands for higher wages and chooses to wait for them to end – starving the miners whose families are soon penniless because wages are not being paid. A group of gays and flats in London decided to help out and start fundraising. They call themselves “Lesbians and Gays Support Miners” and manage to scrape together a lot of money, but when they have to hand the sum over to miners in a small town in Wales, they meet a certain resistance… I’m not interested in taking money from gays and flats…
One of the village’s local organizers later admitted that they were expecting “a bunch of wrecking balls”. But in reality, the visit meant the removal of barriers and the shattering of stereotypes on both sides – instead, a relationship began between these groups that lasted long after the strike.
The miners and the gay activists realized they had a lot in common, like how they had been mistreated by the police, and how wrong they were. It was portrayed in the media as well as direct attacks from the Conservative government. Lesbians & Gays support the Miners also wrote that “if we don’t win this strike, we’ll have a lot to lose when Thatcher’s party comes after us”.
Turns out that’s exactly what happened. After Thatcher crushed the strike, she began pressing for laws banning the “promotion of homosexuality”, known as Section 28. However, the miners’ federation along with the LGBTQ community fought against the laws, but with many mines already closed, their impact Weak. However, this was a sign of solidarity between the two groups.
Pride is a true English feel-good movie through and through. It has been praised worldwide and called “brilliant”, “irresistible” and “pride will make you cheer”. in Pridewhich can be seen as a combination of films such as calendar girls, All or nothing And brass off, We meet gays and old idiots, political flats and girls who aren’t as straight as they think – and of course gorgeous English ladies “(gays like you have arrived”)!
The whole story is exciting and entertaining. And because it’s based on reality, it’s also a good LGBTQ history lesson.
