Test: How good is the camera in Apple iPhone 14

Kamera & Bild works with our sister newspaper cell phone I tested the Apple iPhone 14. Here you can read a summary of how the camera performs.

Apple continues to sell the iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 in parallel, and with the same memory configuration, the iPhone 14 costs a whopping 1,500 SEK. At the same time, the difference between iPhone 13 and 14 is smaller than ever between two generations of iPhone.

It’s as if Apple long ago crossed the line where the system couldn’t get faster than it is no matter what you do with the processors, and the extra computing power mainly goes to improving the image output from the camera.

That’s the argument Apple makes regarding the iPhone 14, better photos. According to Apple, the iPhone 14 has a “huge” camera upgrade, consisting of a larger sensor for the main camera, better image processing for dark photos, an Action mode for better image stability when shooting and a new selfie camera with autofocus.

Difficult to tell the difference to the ancestor

Apple’s fondness for big words seems out of place here. I shot and compared photos from iPhone 13 and 14 side by side. Most of the time, they look like they were taken with the same camera. If you zoom in to the maximum, you can sometimes perceive more detail in the resulting image from the iPhone 14, especially for green areas that are not in the focus area of the image. If I had to choose one of the photos, I always chose the photo from the iPhone 14 instead of the iPhone 13, but we are talking about the differences that are only on the right side of the limits of human perception.

In the dark, the difference is more noticeable, but then we’re not talking about the headlight bulb inside, but rather about the darker black to notice the difference. Under these circumstances, the iPhone 13 and 14 aren’t among the best at taking photos, but in any case, you don’t have to make an effort to see that the iPhone 14 is better.

The improved image stabilization is called Motion Mode and uses the mobile’s wide-angle camera, which is then cropped to roughly the same section as the regular camera. If you are running and photographing at the same time, it is very effective in image stabilization, but normal image stabilization is almost as good and has better image quality if you are just walking and photographing.
