Property tycoon Robert
Tchenguiz is involved in what This Is Money calls ‘another bitter fallout’ with
his previous lawyers.
The report says that legal firm Stephenson Harwood is suing one of Tchenguiz’s trusts for £6m in unpaid legal fees. The trust has failed to pay them after blaming the firm for losing a high profile court case and is now counter-suing them alleging professional misconduct.
The matter which is the original source of the dispute is a High Court case last year against former business partner the Abu Dhabi based investment company Aabar. It related to a failed attempt to buy the Madrid headquarters of Spanish bank Santander which has been the subject of ownership wrangles for the last decade or more. The judge in the case was critical of Tchenguiz’s conduct relating to the case but his Edgeworth trust is believed to be holding Stephenson Harwood responsible for losing it.
