As part of the Svedbergs Group’s sustainability business, the group has decided that subsidiary Roper Rhodes will invest in the installation of solar panels on the 20,000 square meter rooftop of the Portbury Distribution Center in Bristol. The total investment is about 6 million. Swedish Krona (about £500,000).
“This investment is part of the Svedbergs Group’s sustainability work, as we purposefully and focused reduce our climate footprint. Throughout our 100-year history, we have always focused on saving resources and thus reducing our environmental impact,” says Per Arne Anderson, CEO of Svedbergs Group.
After the building has been successfully inspected and planning permission granted, work on the installation will begin later this year. Once the panels are up and running, the entire Roper Rhodes operation will be self-sufficient in clean energy and will also help meet the UK’s need to triple its solar energy production by 2030 to keep pace with the net-zero vision.
“At first glance, the UK may not seem the most obvious choice for solar panels, but the system we will be using will produce 600 kWh during daylight hours, providing not only enough for our consumption but also additional electricity to feed the national grid,” Says Will Steele, COO.
This is the largest project of its kind undertaken by the company. However, Rober Rhodes has recognized the importance of sustainability and has taken several initiatives in recent years to improve the company’s environmental impact. For example, solar panels aren’t new to business, and Brassmills, the office of Roper Rhodes’ Bath, actually installed them in the summer of 2018. The existing panels already make a significant contribution to the operation of the entire building with more than 70 people working each day.
After a successful trial, a fleet of more than 30 vehicles for the national sales team has now moved to an all-electric fleet. This also means the expansion of several charging points in both business offices so that all employees can charge the vehicle while they are at work. The company has also conducted innovative testing by adding an all-electric vehicle to its transportation vehicles. The vehicle, a 3.5-ton pickup truck, was delivered to customers in the Bath and Bristol area.
“I am really pleased that our new parent company, Svedbergs Group, has shared our commitment to protecting the environment and has made the decision to invest in such a huge project. The implementation of solar panels in Portbury represents a fundamental change in how we do so. Manage our energy effectively for many years to come.”says Roper Rhodes CEO Leigh Leather.
