It seems that Samsung is experimenting with another solution where the phone is equipped with only one camera that acts as the main camera and the selfie camera. Above, you can check out a diagram of Samsung’s patent application which will show how this camera could work.
Samsung previously experimented with a rotating camera on its Galaxy A80 model released in 2019. There was only one main camera that rolled up and rotated 180 degrees if the user wanted to take selfies. The idea behind this solution was that no lens would take up space on the phone screen.
In the patent now filed by Samsung, it doesn’t appear to be the screen surface they tried to save. Instead, it is a rotating camera that is mounted on one side of the phone and can then be oriented towards the desired angle. As can be seen in the photo on the right, this may be convenient if, for example, you have to point the camera at different positions during, for example, a video conference.
It is still unknown if Samsung will release a foldable phone with a rotating camera solution. In the video below, you can see the Galaxy A80’s rotating camera.
