The rescued sailor is found floating in the sea by a passing freighter. He is said to be weak but alive, and is now being treated aboard the warship that brings him ashore.
Earlier on Tuesday, it was announced that another survivor had been found, a claim that the Thai Navy later retracted. Five dead people were found in the water.
The warship HTMS Sukhothai was caught late Sunday by huge waves and strong tidal currents and sank after it reached the water. It is said that the ship suffered a crisis after water damaged the operating system.
On the same evening, 75 sailors were rescued from the dark waters of the Gulf of Thailand, but many people are still missing. Emergency services are in a desperate battle against the clock.
– I hope to find survivors because they have life jackets. But I think they are exhausted,” said Naval Officer Narong Khumburi earlier on Tuesday.
On a pier in Prachuap Khiri Khan district, worried relatives wait.
– I thought it would be fine, nothing bad would happen because of the storm, says Phungsri Soksawat, who still hopes her 22-year-old son is alive.
– I would like to hug him, you say.
Meteorological institutes in Thailand issued warnings of continued strong winds and urged all those out to sea with caution. Small boats are told not to go out at all.
