Hungary is moving forward with its plans to build Russian nuclear reactors.
The construction of two new reactors belonging to the Russian company Rosatom will begin in the coming weeks.
The project is expected to cost 12.5 billion euros, or approximately 130 billion kroner. It will be an addition to the four reactors already operating at the PAX plant, located 10 miles south of the capital, Budapest.
The progress of the project is another sign of the close ties between Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“This is a big step, an important milestone,” Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Sigarto wrote on Facebook.
According to the minister, it is realistic that the new reactors can be commissioned in 2030.
The Pax plant is Hungary’s only nuclear power plant and accounts for about 40 percent of the country’s electricity needs. Russia will lend 10 billion euros for this project.
Finland suspended a similar Russian nuclear project in May due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
