A 170-carat pink diamond was discovered in a diamond mine in Angola, southwest Africa. The gem may be the largest of its kind found 300 years ago.

The pink diamond, called “Lulu Rose”, will be sold through international purchases by the state-owned diamond marketing company. However, it must be ground and polished before its value can be assessed.

Angola’s mines are among the largest producers of diamonds in the world. The Lulu mine, where the pink diamond was found, once produced the two largest diamonds ever found in Angola, including a clear diamond weighing 404 carats.

The newly discovered pink diamond is the fifth largest in the mine.
