Qualcomm created a form of cross-generation for main processors when it introduced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (and later the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1). Now the company wants to make the same kind of generational change for mobile phones that do not belong to the exclusive flagship models with two new chipsets – Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 for the mid-range segment and Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 for the budget segment.
Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 is based on 4nm technology and some performance information is provided for the new processors, but it is not specifically specific. For example, the Snapdragon 6 is said to have 40% higher processor performance and 35% faster graphics performance than its predecessor – however, they don’t mention the circuit they consider to be the predecessor of this first generation processor in the new series. It should also have three times higher AI performance.
Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 is based on 6nm technology and is said to have a 15 percent faster processor than the unnamed previous one, as well as 10 percent higher graphics performance.
In contrast, Qualcomm is more explicit about camera support as the two processors can handle camera sensors up to 108MP.
Both also support 5G – Snapdragon 6 with Snapdragon X62 5G modem while Snapdragon 4 has Snapdragon X51 5G modem.
The first phones with Snapdragon 6 are expected at the beginning of 2023, while the first phones with Snapdragon 4 may arrive already in the fall.
