proton lane is a new password manager from the developers of the encrypted email service Proton, which was recently released in beta for Android and iOS and browser extensions for Chrome and Brave. First of all, users with Lifetime and Visionary subscriptions will be accepted, but eventually Proton Pass will become free for all subscribers.
The new password manager is primarily developed by developers from Simple Login, a company that Proton acquired in 2022, with the help of a number of Proton developers.
Published by Proton A Detailed security review in Proton Pass. The company uses a “bcrypt” encryption algorithm to hash the master password, unlike most other password managers that use “pbkdf2,” and is careful to point out that all saved data is end-to-end encrypted. This differentiates Proton Pass from Lastpass, which after a major hack last year was found to store, for example, URLs of saved login details unencrypted.
Proton Pass uses the same protocol (Secure Remote Password) as Proton Mail for authentication between client and server. This allows the user to show the server that they have the correct password without sending it in any form, and at the same time the server can prove to the user that it is not fraudulent.
